Celebrating Our Legacy and Our Future

Josephine Herrick Project amplifies underrepresented voices through photography, giving people the tools to see differently, communicate across cultures, and advocate for themselves and their communities. Our free photography programs reach more than 600 New Yorkers annually, including veterans, newly arrived students in International High Schools, young people with diverse learning needs, and intergenerational groups in communities across all five boroughs—and that number continues to grow.

Founded in 1946 as Volunteer Service Photographers, our organization served veterans returning from World War II, using photography as a tool for rehabilitation and empowerment.

What began as an innovative effort to support those who served has grown over 80 years of continuous operation into an organization serving New Yorkers of all ages, abilities, and backgrounds. We renamed in 2013 to honor our founder, pioneering photographer Josephine Herrick, whose vision continues to guide our work today.

Join us on May 14 at Salesforce Tower for a special evening featuring distinguished guests, breathtaking views, and inspiring programming. Your attendance directly supports the sustainability and growth of our programs.

We are proud to welcome our honorees, who embody the importance of supporting photography for all communities:

  • Susan Meiselas, Photographer

  • Randy Bourne & Ron Sharpe, Board Emeritus and Board Member since 1986

  • Geoffrey C. Ward, Emmy Award Winning Historian and Author
